Itineraries in Baunei - S. Maria Navarrese
The area is a splendid combination of sea and mountains, with its 40 km of limestone cliffs and ramparts, from Santa Maria Navarrese to Cala Luna, interrupted by little sandy bays, with famous places such as the monolith of Pedra Longa, Capo Montesanto, Portu Quau, Cala Biriola, Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu, Cala Sisine and Cala Luna; the Golgo basalt plateau with Su Sterru, Europe's deepest sinkhole; and the Margine karst plateau. . The local fauna includes important species such as the Golden Eagle, Eleonora's falcon, Audouin's gull, mouflon, and wild boar... There are many cave systems inland from the coast, extending both above and below sea level. There are archaeological remains from all periods: anthropozoic relics from the prenuragic period, nuraghi, nuragic villages, fortresses and tombe dei giganti, settlements and coins from the Imperial and Republican periods, from Roman times, the medieval churches of Santa Maria Navarrese and of Eltili, the Spanish tower, the church at Golgo, Spanish coins and part of the parish church of San Nicola di Baunei of the Sabaudian period.

Walking in Baunei
Baunei is a splendid combination of sea and mountains, and is of great natural interest, with its limestone valleys, and the Golgo basalt plateau with Su Sterru, Europe's deepest sinkhole; and the Margine karst plateau.
On the Supramonte of Baunei you can do multi-day walks such as the Selvaggio Blu, one of the Mediterranean's most famous treks, or the single day walks which take you to the finest sandy bays such as Cala Goloritzè, Cala Mariolu, Cala Sisine and Cala Luna.

The Grotta del Fico: the last kingdom of the Monk Seal
The entrance to the Grotta del Fico is 7 m. above sea level in the splendid limestone wall of the Gulf of Orosei. Handy walkways allow you to walk along the fossil bed of an ancient underground river and enter into the mysterious and fascinating world of this cave system. The cavern is located between the splendid beaches of Cala Goloritzè, Ispuligidenie and Cala Biriola, and is particularly important for the numerous sumps leading to the sea and through which the Monk Seal entered the cave to breed on the beaches inside. Padre Antonio Furreddu, one of the founders of speleology on the island, dedicated his life to studying this mammal. The island's most important research programmes were carried out by this Jesuit explorer in 1957, in the Grotta del Fico itself on the Baunei coast.

Free Climbing
The Baunei area seems to have been made for the climber. There are cliffs and crags everywhere, while the famous Aguglia, a limestone obelisk 147 m high, has become the symbol of Mediterranean climbing in Europe and has been climbed thousands of times by climbers from all over the world.
In climbing terms, the Baunei area was first explored in the 70's, but only in the following decade were the more difficult walls overlooking the sea climbed: Aguglia, Monte Ginnircu, Punta Giradili, Punta Argennas. Sports climbing arrived in Baunei relatively recently. The sports-climbing crags Villaggio Gallico and Creuza de Ma on the road down to Pedra Longa, Porto di Santa Maria Navarrese, and this crag has been a great success from day one.
